Balanced-pressure or bimetallic steam traps?

Compare two thermostatic operating principles and understand why condensate cooling requirements matter in product selection.

Both respond to temperature

Thermostatic traps respond to temperature rather than relying on the same mechanism as a float trap. A balanced-pressure trap uses a temperature-sensitive element, while a bimetallic trap uses the response of dissimilar metals. Both can be useful where their discharge characteristics fit the process. The product family should follow the drainage requirement, not simply replace whichever body looks similar.

Define acceptable condensate cooling

The degree of condensate cooling before discharge matters to the application. Some duties can tolerate or benefit from holding condensate until it cools; other equipment requires prompt drainage near steam temperature. Explain the process objective and whether condensate retention would reduce performance. Ask the selecting engineer to consider this requirement alongside pressure, temperature, capacity and the return system.

Keep capsule and model options distinct

BPC32 and BPT13 references can include different element or connection options. SMC32 belongs to a different operating family. State the full suffix and any documented discharge-temperature option when requesting a quotation. Never infer a capsule specification from a photograph or assume that an alternative element will preserve the behaviour of an existing installation.

Consider start-up and air removal

At start-up, a system may contain air and relatively cool condensate. These conditions are different from steady operation. Include the start-up requirement and any sensitivity to non-condensable gases in the selection information. A separate air vent may be appropriate in a system design, but the requirement must be evaluated for the equipment and the selected trap configuration.

Request a documented comparison

For an alternative proposal, ask the supplier to compare operating principle, discharge characteristics, capacity basis, connections and maintenance parts. A lower purchase price is useful only when the product satisfies the duty. STV can organize the original requested model and clearly identify any proposed alternative, allowing your engineering team to approve the choice before the order is placed.

General guidance. Final selection must be checked against manufacturer documentation and the actual operating conditions.
