What you need to size a pressure reducing valve

Flow and operating conditions determine the right configuration.

Record the operating envelope

Provide the medium, minimum and maximum inlet pressure, required downstream pressure, steam temperature and minimum, normal and peak flow. State whether pressure values are gauge or absolute.

Avoid sizing from pipe diameter alone

An oversized regulating valve can operate too close to its seat during low demand. A valve that is too small may not deliver the required flow. Use the manufacturer sizing method for the actual conditions and consider demand variation.

Distinguish product variants

The DP27 family contains variants for steam, compressed air and inert gases. The soft-seated gas variants and electrical versions have different limits. Do not assume suffixes are interchangeable. The DP27 family is not suitable for oxygen service.

Review the complete station

The enquiry should address upstream separation and drainage, strainers, isolation, downstream pressure sensing and required overpressure protection. Protection and sizing must be assessed for the actual installation by the responsible engineer.

General guidance. Final selection must be checked against manufacturer documentation and the actual operating conditions.
